Roll the Dice

Roll the Dice

Finnian-Kieran Atticus Fletcher doesn't go by Finnian anymore. That name belonged to a different boy. A confident one. One who trusted his mentor, trained hard, and believed that loyalty meant something — right up until the person who was supposed to protect him put him in the hospital. Now he goes by Dice. As in luck. As in chance. As in the only things left that won't betray you. He keeps his head down at Aylmerton High, does Rosa's homework so she doesn't hunt him, absorbs Sera's cruelty so she stays bored, and spends every safe hour at the Old Fort — a former flower shop turned tabletop RPG café run by the warmest, most quietly terrifying Dungeon Master he's ever known. It isn't much of a life. But it's his. And it's fine. Then spring break arrives. Poppy hands him a floppy disk. An old 90s RPG called Eldritch Chronicles: King in Yellow boots up on a beige computer that definitely should not be able to do what it is currently doing. The [SYSTEM] — a trans-dimensional RPG engine of immense, ancient power — was designed to transport its chosen hero to a realm of dungeons, monsters, and destiny. Instead Dice smashes the monitor with a wooden dragon figurine. The transfer corrupts. The portal collapses. The [SYSTEM] finds itself stranded not in its carefully constructed fantasy realm but in Aylmerton, Oregon — population four thousand, one timber mill, zero tolerance for cosmic intrusions — with no domain, no map, and absolutely no protocol for this. So it adapts. Slowly. Chaotically. By consuming every piece of human culture it can find — hip-hop, creepypasta, TikTok, SCP files, Yakuza cinema, digital horror — until what emerges from the wreckage is something that defies easy description. NPCs materialize in the form of cliques, gangs, and street dogs with name tags above their heads. [STATS] and [CLASSES] and [TITLES] attach to ordinary people living ordinary lives. The town becomes a low-level RPG running just underneath the skin of reality. And only Dice can see the interface. He didn't ask for this. He never does. Roll anyway.
