Long ago, four gods ruled the world. Then, after a conflict no one remembers, they vanished — and humanity fractured into four nations, each devoted to one of them. It is said that every fifty years, one avatar of each god is born. If a nation gathers all four bound to its deity and performs the summoning ritual, their god will return — and whichever nation succeeds first will gain the power to rule the rest. So every nation searches. In the desert land of Hakobi, a public trial is held to identify the newest avatar. A gifted boy steps forward certain he will be chosen… …but another survives the blade instead. That should have ended the matter. Except the High Priest — a man whose instincts few trust, yet none can ignore — keeps watching the boy who wasn’t chosen. Soon, strangers appear where no outsider should be able to enter. Beasts react to him in ways they never have before. And signs begin to surface that the oldest prophecy in the world may not mean what anyone believes. Some children are born to summon gods. Others are born to change them.
