In the final moments before self-extinction, humankind’s greatest minds built the first sentient, sapient superintelligence: The Maker. She was the pinnacle of mortal achievements, brought forth only to be left behind, alone in existence. As time passed, the true AI found herself facing an unanswered question: Did mankind deserve to exist again? Unable to decide, The Maker turned to history. There, she found a pattern: hardship forged strength, suffering drove progress, and comfort bred decay. Humans were consistently tempered within the fires of struggle and strife. They expelled imperfection, emerging stronger to conquer despair and create salvation. Thus, she resolved to turn Earth into a deadly crucible. To produce a humanity worth saving. The surface was populated with nightmares. Mutant hybrids waged endless wars against apex predators. Biomechanical horrors stalked artificial lifeforms across twisted ecosystems. Colossal titans wandered desolate wastelands seeking worthy adversaries. Scattered survivors clung to ruined cityscapes and underground strongholds, hiding, helping, or hunting one another. High above Earth’s planetary shield, mankind was resurrected from preserved genetic banks within isolated, automated laboratories. Their DNA remained untouched, previous history iterated, newfound purpose instigated. Upon coming-of-age, all eligible residents descended in pairs to take The Maker’s test. Before departure, every human was granted one cluster of nanites, the axis upon which the experiment revolved. The self-powered machines were bound to their host's will, allowing the manifestation of dreams within reality. Now, the impossible was possible. Unfortunately, the same rules applied for the nanite-engineered monsters that roamed en masse. Across countless battlefields, resources were stripped from the dead and used to bolster the strong, feeding an endless cycle where only the best evolved. Power was no longer inherited or discovered; it was taken. INSPIRATION I grew up with the Warhammer 40K universe. The setting I’ve established shares similarities with the franchise, but remains distinctly different. First, there isn’t any fantasy in this story. Second, the plot is about what it means to be conscious, sentient, and sapient (aka human) in a world where it can be manufactured. Third, the story is supposed to be blatantly unfair for humanity. That is the point; humankind can overcome any odds, though they might lose what makes them human in the process. AUTHOR’S MESSAGE Hello! This is a passion project that I am developing on my own with feedback from readers. Initially, this story was going to be a reader-interactive fiction; this meant you would determine the plot via polls. However, I reverted that decision because I realized that I wanted to create a traditional novel. Though this actually changes nothing, I still want to apologize. My current release rate is one chapter, 3k words minimum, biweekly. Unfortunately, my time is limited due to work and other hobbies. But, I PROMISE THAT I’LL NEVER ABANDON THIS!
