In the ancient kingdom of Eshnunna—where ziggurats rise like steps to the gods and the Euphrates carries both life and secrets—sixteen-year-old orphan Lament works as a lowly laundry servant in the household of the powerful and cruel Lord Farinwa. When his mother Flora dies, she leaves him only a small chest containing a single red jewel of unknown purpose.
One morning, after lingering too long listening to servants’ tales by the bonfire, Lament is late to his duties. The harsh overseer Old Harun punishes him with a month of brutal labor on Lord Farinwa’s distant farms, far beyond the city walls.
Alone in the scorching fields, grieving and restless, Lament stumbles into a hidden valley during a storm. There he encounters a strange, radiant glow from an unknown source. The light grants him a rare and dangerous ability: to see hidden secrets. When the power awakens, his eyes shine golden—but only he can see this glow in his own reflection. The price is temporary blindness, replaced by an inner “eternal light” that lets him perceive truth.
As Lament grows into adulthood, mysterious energy beings begin entering the world. Made of pure, formless energy, they can shape or wear human bodies, moving among people unseen for what they truly are. They are breeding with mortals, giving rise to enormous, destructive giants that threaten to tear Eshnunna and the world apart.
Lament is the only one who can see through their disguises and uncover their plans. Yet every use of his gift forces a brutal choice. The kingdom is harsh and self-serving—lords crush the weak, betrayal is rewarded, survival often means becoming as ruthless as those in power. Tempted to use his sight for personal gain, revenge, or escape, Lament is constantly pulled back by the values Flora instilled in him: truth, compassion, and protecting the innocent, no matter the cost.
