The Eternal End

The Eternal End

Chapter 1, The Burden of Ages, introduces the world, tone, and central tragedy of -The Eternal’s End- through the perspective of Alaric the Unending—an immortal warrior cursed to live without release in a hostile, monster-filled land. The chapter functions both as an atmospheric opening and a philosophical foundation, establishing immortality not as a blessing but as a slow, grinding punishment that erodes meaning, connection, and hope. The chapter opens in the Grey Wastes, a desolate region defined by ash, ruin, and a perpetually bruised sky. This barren landscape mirrors Alaric’s inner state: exhausted, hollow, and worn down by centuries of existence. Alaric wanders without urgency, driven not by ambition or conquest but by a singular, paradoxical goal—to find a way to die. Once a knight sworn to a god, he now bears the consequences of that devotion. In the god’s dying moments, Alaric was cursed with immortality, a cruel irony for a man who once sought an honorable death. His body no longer ages and heals from all wounds, but his mind and soul carry the accumulated weight of countless battles, losses, and failed hopes. Alaric’s physical description reinforces his history. His armor is scarred and mismatched, a patchwork of centuries of repairs. His sword, Soulrend, is ancient and reliable, a constant companion through eras that have blurred together. Though his body remains strong, his expression betrays profound weariness. He feels pain as keenly as any mortal—sometimes more so—because he must endure it endlessly. Each wound heals, but none of the suffering fades. The chapter emphasizes that immortality has not made him invincible; it has only ensured that death is never permanent. Alaric’s current journey has no clear destination beyond his obsession with the Void of Silence, a mythical place rumored to offer oblivion even to the immortal. He has chased legends and ancient texts across centuries, only to be met with riddles and disappointment. The Void represents not hope in the traditional sense, but release—an end to memory, pain, and the loneliness that has driven others like him into madness. His continued movement is less about optimism and more about survival; to stop walking would be to surrender to despair. The stillness of the Grey Wastes is broken when Alaric encounters his first threat of the chapter: Shadow-Rats, classified as Vermin Level monsters. Though individually weak, they attack in overwhelming swarms. Their unnatural speed, venomous bites, and semi-ethereal bodies make them dangerous even to a seasoned warrior. Alaric fights them methodically, cutting them down with practiced efficiency, but their numbers threaten to overwhelm him. The battle reinforces the setting’s brutal reality and demonstrates the monster ranking system in action, grounding the world in structured danger. During the fight, Alaric is unexpectedly aided by a stranger wielding a crossbow from higher ground. The bolts glow faintly and disintegrate the Shadow-Rats more efficiently than Alaric’s blade. The newcomer is agile, precise, and clearly experienced. Together, they thin the swarm and survive the encounter. This moment marks the first crack in Alaric’s long-standing isolation. The stranger reveals himself as Kaelen, a lean, sharp-tongued thief with quick reflexes and quicker wit. His initial banter is irreverent, mocking Alaric’s age and near-misses, but his tone carries curiosity rather than malice. When Kaelen witnesses Alaric’s rapid regeneration—watching a deep wound close before his eyes—he reacts with surprise but not fear. He recognizes that Alaric is “one of those,” implying prior knowledge of immortal or cursed beings, and accepts it with pragmatic detachment. Their brief exchange establishes an immediate contrast between the two men. Alaric is ancient, taciturn, and burdened by meaning; Kaelen is young, cynical, and focused on survival and profit. Yet both share a quiet weariness born of living dangerously in.
