Straight from the Abyss

Straight from the Abyss

by BrotatoWho

Urban FantasyAnti-Hero LeadComedyNon-Human LeadFantasy

When ancient demon Matir is summoned from the Deep Abyss, he expects a powerful sorcerer or a blood sacrifice. Instead, he finds Bryan, a college student in a bathrobe, standing outside a shaky circle of sidewalk chalk. Matir is a creature of shadow and apathy, looking more like a sleep-deprived burnout in a hoodie than a prince of darkness—save for the lavender skin and ram horns that only Bryan (and the occasional cat) can see. Rather than devouring his summoner, Matir is struck by the sheer absurdity of the ritual. Bryan isn’t a cultist; he’s just a guy trying to get an easy "A" in History of Witchcraft and Demonology. The demon’s boredom turns to suspicion when he realizes Bryan’s "homework" was written on authentic vellum—a dangerous, high-grade magical conduit. Matir deduces that the professor, Dr. Rosslind Cormanci, isn't just teaching history; she’s using her undergraduate students as unwitting "divining rods" to test lethal rituals. Drawn in by curiosity and a lingering sense of demonic professional pride, Matir drags Bryan on a late-night breaking-and-entering mission into the Historical Studies building. As they bypass security and snap through deadbolts, the unlikely duo must uncover Cormanci’s true agenda. While Bryan worries about his GPA and potential expulsion, Matir knows the real danger: if a "polite" demon like him could answer the call, it’s only a matter of time before another student summons something that won't stop to drink an off-brand cola before killing them.
