Elian Thorne

Elian Thorne

Urban FantasyStrong LeadDramaActionAdventure

In the year 1892, Halgruen Prison rises like a smoking scar on the edge of civilization. Its walls are black with soot, its corridors lit by trembling gas lamps, its rules dictated by a single voice that allows no appeal. Halgruen is known as the Common Pit, a Victorian industrial prison where men, women, and children are crushed together and worked until their bodies fail. The youngest inmates are called Runners, children forced into boiling steam pipes and suffocating gutters to tend the vast engines hidden inside the fortress. Many never come back out. Elian Thorne is twelve years old when the state brands him a terrorist and throws him into the Pit. Hunger is constant, fear is routine, and survival depends on avoiding the Iron Jacks, a gang of older prisoners ruled by the cruel and unpredictable Vane. Above them all drift the Keepers, faceless figures that patrol the catwalks and feel less human than rumor. Elian learns quickly that weakness is visible and mercy does not exist. Everything fractures during a mission meant to kill him. Sent deep into the Boiler chambers, Elian is trapped when a pipe ruptures and floods the room with the Waste, a glowing violet substance that leaks from the prison core. It is said to poison lungs and rot flesh, yet Elian does not die. In terror and pain, he absorbs it. The energy tears through him and erupts outward, ripping open a section of the prison wall that was believed to be unbreakable. Elian survives, changed. Alongside Miri, sharp minded and exhausted beyond her years, and Kael, whose fear never quite leaves his eyes, he learns the truth. They are Unbound, children born with magic in an age where magic has been outlawed, drained, and burned as fuel. Their awakening should have been impossible. Worse still, the prison itself is responding. The core is building toward a Great Unmaking, a ritual that will erase the world beyond Halgruen’s walls. Their only unexpected help comes from Jax, a senior Iron Jack whose brutality is more armor than nature. He knows what Halgruen truly is. The Warden, Malphas the Hollow, is not merely a tyrant but a sorcerer who feeds on despair. Every scream, every broken child, every stolen hope strengthens the ritual he has anchored to the prison’s heart. Escape is no longer an option. If the children flee, the ritual completes and the world ends. Instead, they live two lives. By day, they remain invisible, enduring labor, hunger, and Vane’s cruelty to avoid suspicion. By night, they slip beyond the prison walls, phasing into a mist drenched forest that exists between worlds. There they search for forgotten relics, clash with Malphas’s shadow creations, and return before dawn with blood on their hands and ash on their clothes. Time runs thin. Elian struggles to control power that wants to explode out of him. He learns to shape magic from what the prison gives him, glass shards turned into conduits, engine oil brewed into crude potions, chains etched with stolen symbols. As Jax fully joins them, the Runners of Halgruen become something the prison never intended to create. They are no longer children waiting to be broken. They are the final barrier between a locked gate and the end of everything.
