Quinn Wexley is not interested in heroism, friends, or taking month-long trips to Italy to “find herself”. She just wants to enjoy a quiet life full of depravity—unbothered, thank you very much. As expected, bothering people is the government’s top priority. Letting degenerate vagabonds act as guardians for children is, apparently, frowned upon. If Quinn doesn’t come up with a solution fast, her sister will be taken away and placed somewhere awful. The one solution—indeed, the only solution engineered for people like her— is to join Eterna, the world’s largest virtual reality competition. It’s a year-long, full immersion game that pushes players into outlandish scenarios designed to be entertaining and, above all, profitable. Respawning is not a feature the game’s designers troubled themselves with. Death is as permanent and inevitable as taxes. People sign up anyway due to the obscene, life changing prizes. For Quinn, the reward means legally adopting her sister. She just needs to survive first.
