He is careful, patient, and anonymous by design. In south Florida, he buys a ten-pound mushroom anchor in a boat shop no one will remember, then settles into Everglades City to watch the Barron River and wait for a sponge boat called the Saint Brendan to come home. When the boat finally arrives, the job looks simple. Then it departs before dawn with three unconscious young women hidden below deck, drugged and bound like cargo. Out on open water, with no witnesses and no law, Mathias takes control of the Saint Brendan and turns the ocean into a crime scene that will read like an accident. By the time the Coast Guard arrives, the girls will have a chance at life, and Mathias will be gone.
