The House of Grey Fantasy, friendship, and fate await you in The House of Grey by Collin Earl. Originally released as a serialized audio fiction on Podiobooks in 2009, The House of Grey was my first major writing project, written largely during law school . After more than fifteen years of steady readership and multiple adaptations, the story is now being fully continued and expanded. It felt like the right time to finally introduce it to the Royal Road community. At its core, The House of Grey is a character-driven modern fantasy thriller set in what appears to be a normal high school—complete with difficult classes, strange teachers, food fights… and girls. Fourteen-year-old Monson Grey faces all of those challenges, except for one problem: he doesn’t know who he is. When he looks in the mirror, the scarred face staring back is not someone he recognizes. With no memory of his past, Monson finds himself attending an extraordinary school on an incredible scholarship, surrounded by absurdly wealthy classmates, with no idea how he got there—or why. All he has left of his former life are haunting flashes of imagery that plague his dreams and echoing voices he hears but cannot see. Monson quickly forms friendships with two classmates, Casey and Artorius, each carrying secrets of their own. As increasingly bizarre events begin to unfold around them, Monson starts to question what lies buried in his mind—and whether he will ever be able to trust his new friends with the truth of his fears. Together, the three navigate the halls of one of the most prestigious schools in the country, finding friendship, mystery, love, and answers to their algebra homework, all while slowly peeling back the layers of Monson’s shadowy past. The House of Grey is a traditional urban fantasy featuring swords, magic, fantastical creatures, and a deliberately constructed magic system that unfolds over time. While the world and power matter, this story is driven first and foremost by its characters. What You Can Expect A character-driven modern fantasy with long-term payoff A high school setting layered over hidden magic and supernatural threats A structured magic system revealed gradually Strong themes of friendship, identity, and memory Mystery that builds across arcs and volumes Slow-burn growth, earned power, and meaningful consequences This is not a speedrun power fantasy. The focus is on people first, power second—and the world grows as they do.
