The isolated kingdom of Alfreyad had not seen war for over a hundred years. In times of peace, there isn’t much for a soldier to do. Tammer, a beloved captain of the Kingsguard, clings firmly to the ideals of his station, despite his childish dreams of shining knights and victorious trumpets. A kingdom at peace has no need for a hero. Abyss knows that Alfreyad has the One Fire, a religious relic that had been a jealously guarded secret until whispers and rumors eked beyond Alfreyad’s borders. It had been so secret to protect it from Alfreyad’s greatest fear – her. But really, she just wants to check it out. Sure, she’s a being beyond the expanses of time, made of all the darkness in the universe, but that doesn’t mean that she’s evil. And she really does hate it when people call her The Abyss. She’s just Abyss. But someone else has come to Alfreyad looking for the One Fire. Someone who was willing to murder the innocent just to get it. Someone who is claiming her name. If Abyss is going to ever see the One Fire and protect it from this imposter, she is going to need the help – and reputation – of a certain captain of the Kingsguard. But neither of them were prepared for the festering rot beneath the shining veneer of peace.
