It was a test. The king found an old scroll in the archives with detailed instructions to summon heroes if ever the world were in danger. Unwilling to risk an unknown spell, the king decided to test it to see if it worked. It did. To make matters worse? There really was an apocalypse coming and Oliver only had three months to stop it. Worst of all? Oliver was stuck in a time loop. He had lived the same three months thousands of times and still had no clue how to stop the end of the world.
