Kaelin, at 17 years old, is well past the age at which most people unlock their affinities for the threads. Any combination of: Nature, Mind, Essence, and Time. And yet, despite this she hopes: she hopes and she works in order to be ready once it does appear. Kana on the other hand, can't understand why she does this, why put herself through the pain for something which is obviously not going to happen. Until it does. In a world filled with magic, some spells have been lost to time, the strongest kept quiet by the high mages, and the most evil - forbidden - techniques locked away in the annals of history, only known to those who look. Their use is worthy of a punishment no less than death.  But what happens when someone ignores the rules? Those spells were forbidden for a reason.
